you forgot to tell her to open the windows to air off the gas that might have dissipated into the house. I know it's cold, but you'll have to suck it up unless you want to get blown up. (<- that rhymes! xD)

so turn off the gas, air out the house, turn the knob to "pilot", light the pilot flame with a long match, then turn the knob to "On" or something.
