Canada: Caught Betwenn the Superpowers:
Canadians realized that the next world war might be fought, not in Europe, but in North America. Canada was geo graphically in middle of the superpower struggle. Soviet bombers carring nuclear warheads could arc over the North Pole and streak across Canada toward targets inside the United States. American bombers carrying nuclear weapons could flash through Canadian airpace on their way toward the Soviet Union.Canada's vast northern territory suddenly became critically important to American -- and Canadian -- defence.

Canada and the United States drew closer together in an attempt to defend North America from a Soviet nuclear attack. In 1957, Canada's new prime minister, John Diefenbaker, made it one of his first acts to join the Americans in the North American Air Defence System (NORAD).

Three lines of radar were strung across Canada -- the Pine tree, Mid-Canada, and Distant Early Warning (DEW) lines.
-It reports to a NORAD centre in North Bay, Ontario.

The new nuclear arms could utterly destroy a nation within hours. Some people argues that building more and bigger nuclear weapons helped keep the peace. But many other people, including many Canadians, saw the nuclear arm race as threatening the world peace.

The United States and the Soviet Union also signed a nuclear-test-ban treaty in 1963. This treaty was the first step in a new policy of cooperation and restraint. As a result of several discussions, the United States and the Soviet Union had signed two strategic atms limitations treaties by 1979. But the treaties did not stop the Cold War.

Then, the Soviet Union was in an economic reform in the late 1980s. The reforms were intended to shift the Soviet Unions economix and political systems towars those in the West.
