could it be the sound that gets trapped within the earth's crust?
2000meters is nothing like a shallow hole in the ground... if sound is trapped in this 'hole' it could very well change and vibrate differently and cause the sound that we hear.. thus giving us 'sound from hell'

a opening space under the surface about 2000 m...
how did it happen?

could it be a old batholith or a dike? sill?
no... they should exist deeper then 2000m... hum....
