okie, so Latitude and longitude :)
to make it simple, Latitude refers to degrees north or south of the equator; for example, Vancouver is about 49 degrees north.
Longitude on the other hand, refers to degrees East or West of the Prime meridian in Greenwich, England.
both Lat and Long (short-hand) can be broken down into smaller units of hours and minutes (or seconds

)
why use Lat and Long?
cuz the earth is not flat...so one cannot use x,y coordinates to identify locations on the earth (for small-scale areas, x and y coordinates are okay but not applicable on a grander scale)
you'll soon learn other coordinate systems like UMT and Military Grid....enjoy
