err...well...I haven't heard the sound quality of Audi's sound systems...so...can't really say that an aftermarket deck would make such a big difference...but it did in my Protege~ :)
*I know that Benz S-class comes with kick-ass stereo systems (98' S500 and 01' S500)...while the BMW 5-series came with crappy ones (98' 528)

most factory deck just aint powerful enough to push any after market spkrs, and most dont have pre-outs to hook up to amps~ and converting high level output to RCA will often cause a lot of distortion, or feed backs...

so...if you are serious about "SOUND"...then get an aftermarket HU (get a quality one, to lay out a good foundation)

I've just heard a guy who installed a pair of JL W6's in his van...with a JL 500/1 amp (super high quality stuff)...and it sounded like shit...cuz he was running them off the factory Honda deck, so whenever he turn the volume over 1/2, distortion starts kicking in...and the subs were literally getting fried from all those distortion

I'm pretty sure there are harness kits for European car owners who want to use DIN or Double DIN decks, or you go to quality installers, they'll be able to fabricate a bracket to accomodate the wide stereo cutouts of European cars...

European car usually have real fine audio system. I mean FINE, aftermarket audio are only about... BOOM. Louder treble, called CLEAR and louder bass called DEEP....... European car may have amps rated lower compared to aftermarket car audio amps.... but they may sound better, with really clearer instead of just louder treble and deeper bass instead of just louder bass.

Take a look at this. A 100W Jadis Stereo (100W each channel) Class A amp for Home Hi-Fi can cost you over 5k CAD. a 1000 W Car amp may just go for 1/10th of da cost. Go figure. Watt and loudness ain't da only thing in the audio world. Havn't heard da BMW sound system (98 528 as someone said) but I don't think i'll wanna swap that out for an aftermarket one. Unless I am swapping for the Mark Levinson system from Lexus.... If there are n e Hi-Fi audiophiles here, they will know what I am talkin about. Just my opinion. I myself uses a Sony MD deck in my car... but I dun look for quality sound in da car... To me quality sound ain't really possible in da car. I spend my money for in house hi fi systems instead.

SpeedingQuattro, it depends on what you are looking for. Some people want quality sound, some people want quantity sound. if you want to be loud and clear 1 block away from your car, then get a 1000W sub, amp, deck n such. Otherwise, if I'm you i'll keep da stock Audi stuff in da car.

I know some people won't agree with me here. Just a different opinion for people.

Agree....

that's why car audiophiles are divided into SQ and SPL enthusiasts....and I'm sort of in-between....going for SQ and SPL at the same time....

who says cars can't have good stereo system?
my friend's shop's show car, a PT Cruizer, has over 50k worth of audio mods in it...and it sounds NICE!

basically, most factory systems have tweeters mounted on the door panels (ala VW's and 98' 528) and/or on the side mirror mount (lots of cars)

and they aren't the ideal location, and most stock decks dont have time correction built in, so the sound is concentrated in the middle, rather than concentrated on the front passengers

in SQ cars, what they are trying to do is to re-create the "staging", so the sound appears to come evenly from all around or from the front, depending on what kinda music you are playing...*post getting too long....hehe..

anywayz, to sum everything up...car's can have good audio systems too :biglaugh:
just dont look for them at SPL competitions~ haha

50k? then why is he gettin' a pt for?
true performances of speakers cannot be heard when ur within inches of the speakers. my opinion: 50k of audio mod on car stereo is a waste of $.

err...which part of "show car" dont you understand?

the PT cruizer is just one of their show carz, they've also got a CRX a Prelude and something else, can't rememeber

and when was the last time you saw a Pro class showcar with less than 50k worth of mods? and I mean Pro class....not amateurs

and the 50k invested end up getting them room full trophies (and prize $$ or freebies) and a healthy supply of customers....I wouldn't say it's $ wasted...I'd say it's a clever investment~ 放長線吊大魚

inches away from spkrs?

ok...I'm not a qualified IASCA member...so I might be wrong about this...but at such short distances (compared to home theatre setups)...all the distortions and statics and whatnot can be heard loud and clear....making it harder for the competitors to get clean sound and why do you think ppl put in expensive kickpanels and line drivers and all dat? So the sound are coming in from the "right" directions at the right distances, not like coming in from the door panels....

SQ cars are not your typical neighborhood ghetto imports with glass shattering bass and 10 subwoofers

be sure to checkout the SQ competition at I-Rev...and you'll understand why SQ enthusiasts are pouring thousands of dollars into their systems :biglaugh:

actually, the Bose system in CL is pretty nice

it's sounds very clean and it can be cranked up to put out some serious tunes...but the bass is lacking for my own taste

nonetheless, it's a good factory system :biglaugh:

slap on a single 10" or 8" and you'll have a real good mix
