I somehow doubt the HOnda engine would be better, but it would be cheaper.... |
For Honda to produce an engine that McLaren demanded would not be cheap. It would not be cheap for any manufacturer! The design specified a 250kg, 550hp non-turbo engine.
The high-cost of the McLaren F1 reflected the engineering, architecture, and performance offered. These supercars... contrary to what a lot of people think... do not make any profit. Think of it this way, even the Dodge Viper production line lost money because Dodge was building so "few" of these cars. When DB took over Chrysler, Dodge was afraid that DB would kill the Viper production because it was taking on such heavy losses.
If Vipers - at more than 3,000 units a year - could not cover the R&D and production-cycle cost after 8 years; how could these ultra-exclusive supercars! It's
amazing how far people would go to make a statement! Kudos to their money well lost!
