for the last few weeks i drove my friend's CLK55 AMG nearly everyday, and i must say that it's a really nice car. driving the car in person really changed my view toward MBs, but still, when i take the car into corners the gearbox doesn't downshift immediately, when i exiting the corner the car don't start moving until the torque converter starts spinning. the feeling is just unpleasant, ruining the rigid chasis and sporty suspension set-up. but i guess only the minority(driving enthusiasts) would mind that.
by the way i think SMG is at least a much better manu-metic than MB's conventional autometic gearbox, at least it's using an electrically controlled clutch rather than a troque converter. |
The problem with MB, especially older models is long travel of gas pedal.... Which ,IMHO, kills the feel when driving.... It feels like there is a "Power-Lag", but actually is not.... For same amount of acceleration, you need to push down a little further than other cars' throttle..... Even with newer model's electronic throttle, it still lags a little....
As for tranny, in case you didn't know, with MB's Left/Right "manual-matic" shift, you can press AND HOLD at (-), and tranny should automatically select the best gear for the situation......
