Write poetry properly?
If you are limited to a prescribed format, then you must follow the format like a bible. How many stanzas, what is the rhyming pattern, etc etc.
If you are not limited (free form), then be as creative as you want. You also want to play with the shapes of the words (like how they line up, how the whole shape of the stanza will look like, etc.). Some people do Christmas tree shaped poems, etc. etc. :) Free form is fun, as long as people can catch your artistic meanings.
If you are asked to disect

a poem (they call it "analyzing"... disecting sounds more fun)... Circle, underline, box, and whatever all grouped ideas/structures/symbols. This makes you see things clearly. Analyze clearly, make your points precisely. Never wooshy-washy over things. But never be afraid to write out what you believe some things mean. In the world of poetry, nobody knows exactly what things mean. Unless you are the poet who wrote the poem, how would you know what something means? :)
It's not extremely easy, but it's easier than writing 30-page essays, right? :)
Good Luck!!
