u do know that in a more formal math u should try to express answers as a whole number right? teachers also do that to elminates calculator users that doesnt know how to work with equation and function.

I guess I didn't receive any "FORMAL MATH" training from UBC..
for what I remember.. to write in whole numbers or not.. depends on the prof.. we ask before exams/midterms to see which format our prof prefers.. but of course.. sometimes they accept answers that are close enough to a certain range

calculators are just a "tool" ... if u dont' use equations/functions in math.. what should you be using then??
man.. maybe the profs i had were mean.. coz they always expect us to use the equations/formulas that were taught @@.......................

math is must more than just "whole numbers"

so three of them paid $250
$250/3 = $ 83.3 repeating (what each of them paid)

waiter took $20
and the three ppl got $30 back (so $10 each)

so
each paid $83.3 repeating + $10 = $93.3 repeating

$93.3 repeating x 3 people + $20 that the waiter took = $300


the logic in the ques was just misleading..

you are kind of changing the question. each of the customers still paid $90, not $83.3.

a simple way to view this is all three customers paid $270 (90 * 3), and the waiter stole $20 from the manager. so the manager received $250 in total.
